Implementation
and Timetable
Guiding the work of the Project will be the steering group of the North
Yorkshire Geodiversity Partnership, which includes the British Geological
Survey, English Nature, Hanson plc, Harrogate Borough Council, Nidderdale
AONB, North Yorkshire County Council, Tarmac Ltd and the Yorkshire
Dales National Park Authority.
1 ACTION PLAN
The first step is to produce the Local Geodiversity Action
Plan (LGAP). This will set the scene for the period between 2006 and
2011 as
to how we undertake the work, what priorities there will be, how we
will involve the community, landowners, business and other interested
parties and what sources of funding there are. The full Draft Geodiversity
Action Plan and the Action Plan are both available to download
from
this site.
2 GEODIVERSITY AUDIT
The second phase will investigate, review and document the rocks and
the scenery they form within the Project Area for their local interest,
and national and international geological importance (i.e. a geodiversity
audit). Biological SSSIs will also be investigated to identify potential
geological features of interest.

3 RIGS and DGS
Some key sites will be fully recorded and where possible made accessible as either
Regionally Important Geological Sites (RIGS) or Dales Geological Sites (DGS).
These sites will have a status lower than the already protected Sites of Special
Scientific Interest (SSSIs), but will contribute something special to the understanding
of the UK geology and be important for teaching, recreational or scientific
interest.

4 INTERPRETATION
One aim is to publish a popular geological interpretative map of the Your Dales
Rocks Project Area showing walks and places where interesting rocks and landscapes
can be seen. Other aims are to popularise walks where the story of the rocks
are told through interpretative leaflets as you enjoy the fresh air and scenery
together with a programme of guided walks, talks and school visits.
5 SITE MANAGEMENT
Once RIGS and DGS have been identified and designated, if funding is available
and with the agreement of the landowners, it is our intention to prepare
plans for their management. There are a large number of geological Sites
of Special Scientific Interest in the Project Area and the Partnership will
work with English Nature to ensure their conservation.
FUNDING
The first phase of the Project is being supported by Defra’s Aggregates
Levy Sustainability Fund (ALSF) through its Parnership
Grants Scheme administered by English Nature and the LAR (Landscape, Access,
Recreation) side of the Countryside Agency. Further funding will be sought
to finance the other phases.
